10-Day Morocco Birding & Nature Expedition
This immersive journey takes you across Morocco’s most diverse landscapes—from the peaks of the High Atlas Mountains to the golden dunes of the Sahara and the rich wetlands of the Atlantic coast. Designed for nature lovers and birding enthusiasts, this tour combines spectacular scenery, unique wildlife, and authentic cultural experiences.
Day 1: Marrakech → High Atlas Mountains → Oukaimeden
Your adventure begins in Marrakech, where you are welcomed and introduced to your journey. Leaving behind the vibrant city, we gradually ascend into the breathtaking High Atlas Mountains, a region of dramatic landscapes, traditional Berber villages, and terraced farmland.
As the road winds higher, the scenery transforms from fertile plains into rugged mountain terrain. This transition zone is rich in birdlife, making it an ideal introduction to Morocco’s biodiversity. We take our time to stop at strategic viewpoints and quiet valleys, allowing you to observe species that thrive in these habitats.
Reaching Oukaimeden at 2,600 meters, you will experience a completely different ecosystem. The fresh mountain air, open skies, and rocky slopes create perfect conditions for alpine wildlife. This peaceful setting offers both excellent birdwatching opportunities and stunning panoramic views.
Day 2: High Atlas → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley
After breakfast, we begin our descent through one of Morocco’s most spectacular routes: the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. The drive is an experience in itself, with dramatic curves, deep valleys, and ever-changing scenery.
As we continue south, the landscape becomes drier and more open, revealing the gateway to the desert. Along the way, we make several stops to explore remote areas where birdlife and wildlife adapt to harsher environments.
Near Ouarzazate, we visit the peaceful Mansour Eddahbi Dam. This reservoir attracts a variety of water birds and offers a surprising contrast to the surrounding arid terrain.
By late afternoon, we arrive in Boumalne Dades, where you can relax and enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner in a calm valley setting.
Day 3: Dades Valley → Tagdilt Track → Dades Gorge
Today is dedicated to one of Morocco’s most rewarding natural areas: the Tagdilt Track. This vast open landscape of semi-desert plains is known for its unique ecosystem and excellent birdwatching conditions.
We explore the area slowly, allowing time to observe the subtle beauty of this environment. The silence, wide horizons, and untouched terrain make it a memorable experience, even beyond the wildlife.
Later, we head toward the impressive Dades Gorges. Towering rock formations, winding roads, and deep valleys create one of the most iconic landscapes in southern Morocco. Short walks and scenic stops allow you to fully appreciate the dramatic geology of the region.
Return to Boumalne Dades for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Dades → Todra Gorge → Merzouga
We begin the day with a visit to the stunning Todra Gorge, where vertical cliffs rise dramatically on both sides of a narrow valley. This natural wonder is not only visually impressive but also home to diverse birdlife adapted to rocky environments.
Continuing east, the scenery gradually changes as palm groves, small villages, and desert plains begin to dominate the landscape. Along the way, we stop at quiet locations to explore hidden habitats and observe local wildlife.
By late afternoon, we reach Merzouga, located on the edge of the Sahara Desert. As the golden dunes come into view, you will feel the magic of this iconic destination.
Enjoy dinner and a peaceful night near the desert.
Day 5: Merzouga → Erg Chebbi Exploration
Today is fully dedicated to exploring the majestic Erg Chebbi, one of Morocco’s most famous desert landscapes.
We venture into both the soft sand dunes and the surrounding rocky desert, each offering different ecosystems and wildlife. The vast silence, golden colors, and endless horizons create a unique atmosphere that is both calming and inspiring.
You may also choose to experience a camel ride across the dunes or simply enjoy the beauty of the sunset as the sand changes color with the fading light.
This day is not only about birding—it is about connecting with the desert and experiencing its timeless beauty.
Day 6: Merzouga → Draa Valley → Ouarzazate
After sunrise in the desert, we begin our journey westward through the scenic Draa Valley. This region is known for its endless palm groves, traditional kasbahs, and ancient caravan routes.
Crossing the rugged Anti-Atlas Mountains, we experience a landscape of volcanic formations, rocky hills, and remote villages.
The drive offers many opportunities to stop, explore, and enjoy the raw beauty of southern Morocco. By evening, we return to Ouarzazate for dinner and overnight.
Day 7: Ouarzazate → Souss Valley → Taroudant → Agadir
Today we travel toward the Atlantic coast, crossing from arid landscapes into the fertile Souss Valley.
We pass through Taroudant, a charming town surrounded by ancient walls and often considered a quieter version of Marrakech.
As we approach Agadir, the climate becomes milder and the landscape greener. The ocean breeze and coastal atmosphere provide a refreshing contrast to the desert.
Overnight stay in Agadir.
Day 8–9: Agadir → Souss Massa National Park
These two days are dedicated to exploring the exceptional Souss-Massa National Park, a haven for birdlife and one of the most important ecological sites in North Africa.
We walk along coastal wetlands, estuaries, and sandy dunes, discovering a rich variety of species in their natural habitat. The park is particularly famous for protecting rare and endangered birds.
We also visit Oued Sous, where rivers meet the Atlantic Ocean, creating an ideal environment for migratory birds, flamingos, and seabirds.
These days combine relaxed exploration with unforgettable wildlife encounters in a peaceful natural setting.
Day 10: Agadir → Marrakech
On the final day, we return to Marrakech through scenic mountain roads, with optional stops along the way.
In the afternoon, you will have free time to explore the lively Jemaa el-Fnaa. This iconic square is filled with street performers, food stalls, musicians, and traditional markets, offering a vibrant cultural experience.
