4-Day Atlas Mountains & Desert Edge Birding Tour
This 4-day journey offers a perfect introduction to Morocco’s rich natural diversity, combining the dramatic landscapes of the High Atlas Mountains with the open plains and canyons of southern Morocco.
Starting and ending in Marrakech, the tour takes you through scenic mountain passes, traditional Berber villages, and some of the country’s most rewarding birding locations.
Day 1: Marrakech → High Atlas Mountains → Oukaimeden
Your journey begins with a warm welcome in Marrakech, where your driver-guide meets you at your accommodation or airport. Leaving the vibrant city behind, we head toward the majestic High Atlas Mountains.
As we gradually climb into the mountains, the landscape changes from fertile plains to terraced fields and traditional Berber villages. This region is rich in birdlife, and we make several stops to explore cultivated areas and open countryside. Here, you may observe a variety of resident species that thrive in this environment.
Continuing higher, we reach the rocky slopes and alpine habitats around Oukaimeden (2,600 meters). This unique high-altitude site offers excellent opportunities to spot mountain and endemic species. The contrast between the rugged terrain and open skies creates a peaceful and scenic atmosphere, ideal for both birdwatching and photography.
Day 2: High Atlas → Tizi n’Tichka Pass → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley
After breakfast, we begin a spectacular drive across the High Atlas via the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m), one of the most scenic mountain roads in Morocco.
Along the way, we stop at strategic نقاط (points) where birdlife is active, especially in areas with specific vegetation and rocky terrain. This route offers a chance to observe birds of prey gliding above the valleys, as well as species adapted to mountain ecosystems.
As we descend toward the south, the environment becomes drier and more desert-like. Near Ouarzazate, we visit the Mansour Eddahbi Dam, an important wetland that attracts a wide variety of water birds and migratory species.
We continue to Boumalne Dades, located at the entrance of the famous valley. Dinner and overnight in a comfortable local hotel.
Day 3: Dades Valley → Tagdilt Track → Dades Gorge
Today is one of the highlights of the tour. We depart early to explore the renowned Tagdilt Track, a vast semi-desert plain considered one of the best birding locations in southern Morocco.
This open landscape is ideal for spotting steppe and desert species. The silence, wide horizons, and untouched nature make this experience truly special—not only for birdwatchers but for anyone who appreciates raw natural beauty.
Depending on weather conditions, we spend several hours exploring different sections of the area. Later, we continue to the impressive Dades Gorges, where dramatic rock formations and deep valleys create breathtaking scenery.
Short walks and scenic stops allow you to fully enjoy the canyon’s beauty before returning to Boumalne Dades for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Boumalne Dades → High Atlas Mountains → Marrakech
After breakfast, we begin our return journey to Marrakech, crossing once again the spectacular Atlas Mountains.
Along the way, we make optional birding and scenic stops, giving you one last opportunity to enjoy Morocco’s diverse landscapes. The drive offers a final chance to capture photos of mountain views, valleys, and traditional villages.
By late afternoon, we arrive in Marrakech. You will have free time to explore the lively Jemaa el-Fnaa, where the atmosphere comes alive with street performers, local food stalls, musicians, and traditional markets.
Transfer to the airport or your accommodation. End of the tour.

Posted on Tripadvisor Vacation26684218673Verified Bird watching 👀 Just back from a week long tour of a lifetime! Traveling through the Dades Valley and Ouarzazate was breathtaking, but the birding highlights, like seeing the Pharaoh Eagle Owl and the African Blue Tit were the icing on the cake. Our guide and driver Yass, was the heart of the trip. He was incredibly professional, kind and possessed an eagle eye for spotting wildlife we would have otherwise missed. If you’re looking for a seamless, expert led tour of Moroccan wild side, look no further than Yass and the Discover Moroccan Birds team!Posted on Tripadvisor KaleashaVerified An unforgettable week across Morocco !! Me and some friends had spent a week exploring a diverse range of habitats, including the Atlas Mountains, Dades Valley, Merzouga and Ouarzazate. The birding and scenery were unlike anything I have ever experienced, but what really made the trip was our driver, Moha. He was incredibly patient and answered all of our questions without judgment. He navigated the winding mountain roads with ease and made sure we were comfortable every step of the way. Whether you are a hardcore birder or just a nature lover, this tour is a fantastic way to see the authenticity of Morocco. I highly recommend to everyone, from solo travellers to families wanting to create unique memories for their children.Posted on Tripadvisor Aylin BVerified Birding the Moroccan way Had an amazing tour with discover Moroccan birds, they truly are masters at not only showing us the key sites to get to see the birds we were wanting to see, but also the vast knowledge they have about birding not only in Morocco but also in the world, the passion our driver has for ornithology is admirable, he taught us a thing or 2 about it, and we have been keen birders for over 30 years, was such a fantastic trip, in our down time we also got a chance to watch the sunset after a camel trek to the dunes in the Sahara, our favourite moment has to be getting to see the elusive Tristam's warbler, and getting to see the Flamingos back in Merzouga. Our driver and guide also gave us a amazing lesson on the history and culture of Morocco on route between each stop, Moha was a true gentleman the whole tour, will definitely be coming back next year.Posted on Tripadvisor Carlos D'uvaVerified Experiencia increíble & Totalmente recomendable!
